Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd

Our Day to Serve theme is based on the chorus of "Dear to the Heart of the Shepherd", a hymn by Mary B. Wingate. It speaks about Christ seeking out the "hungry and helpless and cold" who are wandering out in the meadows. The hymn ends with those singing agreeing to be His true undershepherds who will go out and seek them as well.

We are hosting three service projects where you can serve WITH your family (no matter how small!) and friends. We've highlighted the projects and community organizations below.

Opportunities for Everyone

Creating Homemade Cards

This project is great for kids! Create a card with cardstock, construction paper, or any other craft items to be delivered to a senior in the community. Include a little information about yourself and decorate it however you like! Cards can be for an upcoming holiday or season, or just to say hello! Include ONLY your first name (adding a child's age is ok) and please refrain from mentioning religious beliefs.

What are we doing at the Saturday event?

We will have all the materials there for you to make some cards AND we'll be tallying up all the cards we've collected to see if we have reached our goal of 1500 cards! Meals on Wheels serves 1500 meals a day and we want to have one card for each person for one day. 🙂

Preparing Homes for Refugee Families by Collecting Household Items

World Relief Anne Arundel begins preparing homes for refugees before they even arrive. By providing clean, nice, and fully stocked homes for incoming refugees, we are able to welcome them with open arms. Building a comfortable home for our new neighbors communicates the compassionate love of Jesus -- find out how your community can get involved in an apartment set up.

What are we doing at the Saturday event?

We will sort and pack all that has been collected into individual welcome kits that each refugee family will receive. Nan, from the World Relief of Anne Arundel County, will be there to answer any questions you have. We're so excited for her to join us!

Making Handmade Blankets for Children

to provide love, a sense of security , warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

What are we doing at the Saturday event?

We will be making blankets! You DO NOT need to have sewing skills to participate! We'll have sewn and tie blankets being made, so stop by and tie some knots or sew some squares...every little bit is appreciated!

We will also be accepting donations of any clean, homemade blankets you would like to donate.
